We started our 4 week sojourn in the South of France. We had intended to travel around here for a bit then move on to Italy, but once we found Dordogne, we settled in for nearly 2 weeks. The region is a mystical place, offering a rich diversity of natural and rural beauty blended with ancient and historical sites—from prehistoric and Romanesque to Medieval, Renaissance and Classical. The area is bustling with activity—farms, vineyards, markets, villages, caves (eg: Lascaux), restaurants, castle walks, river boating, bicycling, hiking...The food is rustic and sublime—hearty cassoulets, delicate farm cheeses, foie gras, walnuts, olives, wild mushrooms, wild boar, peaches, pears...we ate and ate, and drank the good local wine. Part of our pleasure here was our accommodations. We stayed at "La Borie des Combes" in the small village of Bezenac in the heart of Acquitaine (check out francestonehouse.com for more details on the region and history). It was so peaceful here—high above the valley floor overlooking the Dordogne River valley, we felt both removed and connected. The owners of the La Borie, Jeri and Paul from California, are delightful people and excellent hosts—making sure we had everything we needed and helping us with suggestions for our tour schedules. We spent time just hanging out there, relaxing and exploring the hillside area. One of our favorite morning walks was to the neighborhood castle—one of hundreds in the region, then down the hill for freshly baked croissants at the local bakery. La Borie itself dates back to medieval times and has been carefully restored to accentuate the natural beauty of the wood and stone walls and floors. It’s charmingly decorated and comfortably outfitted so that you feel at home in the Dordogne. There are options for staying here - we chose a cozy gite with its own bath and kitchenette, but when we return with friends and family we’ll stay in the maison—2 bedrooms with full bath and tub, a salon and fireplace, fully equipped kitchen and dining area, and access to the private courtyard with view (plus, use of the laundry facilities). The price for a week’s stay is very reasonable, but the memories, magic and hospitality are priceless.

Our hosts Paul & Gerri are two of the nicest people you'll meet. Both formally from California now living permanently in France, they made us feel welcome and instantly at home. La Borie des Combes is a delightful farm house offering 3 different options of accommodation. We stayed in CHAMBRE GOLD a lovely cool room (outside temp was 30 degrees plus) with comfortable bed, fully equipped en-suite bathroom and small outside terrace, it made a fantastic base from which to explore the surrounding countryside. My wife and I travel to France regularly, but this was our first time in the Dordogne and we were simply blown away by its beauty. There is so much to do and see here, it has to be one of the most stunning parts of France we have seen. Paul & Gerri; Thank you for a fantastic stay and we will definitely be back soon!
